Why is my washing machine not heating water?

Why Is My Washing Machine Not Heating Water?

A washing machine that does not heat water can affect how well your clothes are cleaned. Many washing cycles need hot water to remove stains and kill bacteria. If your machine is not heating water, there are a few common reasons. Some are easy to fix, while others may need a technician.

Faulty Heating Element

The heating element is the part of the washing machine that heats the water. If it is broken, the water will stay cold, even during a hot wash cycle.

How to check:

  • Start a hot wash and pause after a few minutes.

  • Open the door (if safe) and touch the glass. If it's cold, the heater may not be working.

  • A technician can test the element with a multimeter to see if it’s faulty.

Fix:
If the element is damaged, it must be replaced. This is a common repair and not too expensive.

Thermostat Not Working

The thermostat controls the water temperature. If it is broken, the machine may not know when to heat the water or may stop heating too early.

Signs of a faulty thermostat:

  • Clothes are cold after a hot wash

  • The machine gives an error code (some models)

  • Water is too hot or not heated at all

Fix:
A technician can test and replace the thermostat.

Incorrect Wash Settings

Sometimes, the machine is not heating water because of the chosen wash program.

Check the following:

  • Is the wash cycle set to “cold” or “eco”?

  • Some cycles, like “quick wash” or “delicate”, use cold water to protect clothes.

Fix:
Read your user manual and select a cycle that uses hot water. Try running a full “cotton” or “intensive” program.

Problem with the Control Board

The control board is the “brain” of the washing machine. It sends signals to different parts, including the heating element. If there is an issue with the board, it may not tell the machine to heat the water.

Signs:

  • Machine works fine, but never heats water

  • Unusual behavior during cycles

  • Lights flashing or display not working properly

Fix:
This is a complex issue. Only a trained technician should inspect or replace the control board.

Washing Machine Connected to Cold Water Only

Some washing machines are designed to heat water internally. Others need to be connected to a hot water supply.

Check:

  • Is the machine a single-inlet type (cold only)?

  • If it needs both hot and cold, check if the hot water hose is connected and working.

Fix:
Make sure the water supply is correct. If unsure, contact the person who installed the machine or check the user manual.

Limescale Build-Up

In areas with hard water, limescale can build up on the heating element. This can stop the element from working properly.

Signs:

  • Water heats slowly or not at all

  • Machine is noisy when heating

  • White deposits around hoses or inside the drum

Fix:
Use a descaling product once a month. If the build-up is heavy, the heating element may need to be cleaned or replaced.

Sensor or Wiring Problems

Modern washing machines use sensors to monitor water temperature. If a sensor is faulty or wires are damaged, the machine may not heat the water.

Fix:
This requires a professional diagnosis. It is not safe to try fixing internal wiring yourself.

When to Call a Technician

If you have tried all the basic checks and the problem continues, call a qualified technician. Do not open the back of the machine unless you have experience with electrical repairs.
